Texas health insurance and the families who have it could benefit from major changes next year now that the current administration is proposing a new rule for Affordable Care Act subsidy access that addresses a longstanding glitch with the ACA’s regulations pertaining to the affordability of employer coverage. According to a report by CNN workers who don’t have affordable health insurance options through their jobs can qualify for subsidized coverage on the ACA exchanges. The report further clarified that a work-based policy is considered affordable if “it costs the employee less than roughly 10% of his or her income for single coverage.” If finalized, the rule would go into effect in January 2023.

The benefits of such a rule are pretty encouraging as an estimated 200,000 uninsured Americans would gain coverage they didn’t previously have. The article goes on to say that the White House would not comment on how much it would cost to eliminate the loophole, though estimates were around $45 billion over 10 years.
