Lino Joseph, a real estate investor and creator of the Spice House restaurant concept wanted to tap into the cultural diversity found in metro-Atlanta and leverage the fact that Caribbean culinary cuisines have many influences from food and cultures from around the world.  As a result, the menu at Spice House creatively incorporates the influences of dishes from various islands like Jamaica, Haiti, Trinidad, Cuba, Virgin Islands, etc.

“My background is Haitian and Bahamian and after growing up in Miami and traveling internationally, I didn’t see Caribbean cuisine being given the same respect and appreciation as European and Asian cuisines around the world,” says Joseph, who owns Spice House with two partners. “I opened Spice House because I wanted to raise the bar and change the narrative of how people experience dining at Caribbean restaurants,” he shared.

Each of the Spice House Restaurant locations has stylish décor reminiscent of relaxing resort getaways on Caribbean islands. In addition to popular traditional Caribbean dishes like oxtails and rice and peas, the food on the menu also infuses flavors and dishes unique to certain islands, such as Haitian Black Mushroom Rice, Jerk Chicken Egg Rolls, Yuca Fries, etc.

The restaurants are located in the culturally diverse and affluent communities of Midtown and Buckhead, as well as in the predominantly African-American and also affluent communities of Cascade in Southwest Atlanta, and Stonecrest (formerly known as Lithonia) in Southeast Atlanta.  According to Joseph, these locations were all strategically situated because of demographics of the residents. For example, the Cascade restaurant in southwest Atlanta, which was the first to open in 2017, regularly sees customers who include entrepreneurs, professionals, dignitaries and celebrities from film, television, sports and music.

“On any given day, customers in our Cascade location may include community leaders like Atlanta’s new Mayor Andre Dickens, former Mayors Keisha Lance Bottoms and Andrew Young, Rev. Bernice King, as well as TV and music celebrities like Queen Latifah and KeKe Palmer, and some of the cast from the Atlanta Housewives,” says Joseph, “and the same goes for all our locations,” he shared.

Joseph and his partners are entrepreneurs with successful businesses outside of Spice House.  As a result, they are determined that the Spice House Atlanta restaurants support the communities in which they operate. To that end, they host various community events surrounding causes about which they are also passionate. These include economic empowerment initiatives for disenfranchised communities of color, youth development programs, health and wellness and eradicating domestic violence.

The locations for the four Spice House Atlanta restaurants are as follows: Spice House/Cascade restaurant is located at 2247 Cascade RD SW Atlanta, Ga; Spice House Midtown is located at 375 14th St NW Atlanta, GA; the Stonecrest location is located at 2617 Panola Rd, Stonecrest, GA., and the Spice House Buckhead, which opened in late 2021, is located at 2591 Piedmont Rd NE Atlanta, GA.

Primarily focused on offering customers upscale Caribbean cuisine, the Spice House/Stonecrest location is the only one with a stage and offers weekly entertainment. From Wednesday thru Sunday, local, national and internationally known R&B artists, comedians and Caribbean music artists are featured.  In addition, as a means of encouraging and furthering entrepreneurship in business-minded young people of color between the ages of 25 and 40, the Spice House/Midtown recently began hosting invitation-only bi-weekly business networking events, which is growing in popularity.

Spice House Atlanta executive chefs are from various Caribbean islands with each bringing their own flavor and techniques to the dishes on the menu.  The restaurants, which have all grown through word of mouth, are popular spots within their communities.

“Despite the challenges the restaurant industry has seen over the last two years, we’re very pleased and grateful that our restaurants have maintained a steady flow of customers from millennials to baby boomers wanting to experience the art of Island food and culture,” said Joseph, “and we look forward to possibly expanding into other cities soon,” he said.
