Rancho Palos Verdes Prescribed Writing To Avert Cognitive Decline: New Research

Figures from the National Institute of Health (NIH) show that "An estimated 6.7 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer's dementia today. This number could grow to 13.8 million by 2060." While that number is large, Elder Manage Care's research may highlight a method to help prevent individual cognitive decline, allowing more seniors to continue living in their own homes, for longer.

The study explores a technique known as "social prescribing," which has been growing in popularity and allows medical professionals to prescribe treatments that are outside the normal range, but fall within reasonable guidelines. In this study, social prescribing included activities such as creative writing assignments, which are believed to help combat certain types of cognitive decline.

While social prescriptions cannot replace proper medical care, the study shows that these techniques can be applied by non-medically trained staff who have undergone training in these particular techniques, with beneficial effects even in non-clinical settings. However, there was a small complication in the masking methods used in the study.

Traditionally, carers would not know which individuals had received the new treatment, and which were in the control group. However, the study shows that by 6 months into the experiment, the majority of care professionals could determine which participants were receiving the new treatment, and this could be either as a result of poor control methods or because of obvious improvement in their functional outcomes.

This new technique has shown significant promise with no risk from conflicting pharmaceuticals, and with no significant costs, leading Elder Manage Care to add it to their list of services for seniors, that can be provided in the comfort of their own homes.
