The law firm awards the $2,500 scholarship to a deserving student as an investment in their education and future. The annual scholarship is open to students seeking careers in medicine, public health, and other related areas.
Castillo is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in integrative health science at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He plans to pursue a doctorate in physical therapy and certification so that he can become a physical therapy assistant. He volunteers at a local hospital, where he helps registered nurses and doctors with their patients. He delivers medications, answers important phone calls, and alerts medical staff to patients’ needs.
Scholarship Raises Cancer Awareness
The scholarship was created to raise awareness about cancer and cancer-causing ingredients in the products people use. As part of his application, Castillo wrote an essay in which he explained why cancer is a major health issue in the United States and why educating the public about chemicals that cause cancer is important.
“What drew me to this scholarship was the topic itself, like how to avoid or decrease the chances of getting cancer,” Castillo said. He added that because there are so many ways to get cancer, it is important to know the disease’s causes.
Castillo will use the scholarship to pay his tuition for his physical therapy classes. As he continues his studies, he draws on the strength of his father, who he says is his biggest inspiration. “He moved to the U.S. in high school to have a better education and the only language he knew was Spanish. Over the years, he went to college [and] worked real hard, and with his hard work and efforts, he is a small business owner, in selling food to the United States government.”
