Jolly Sailing Celebrates Three Years of Business in Long Beach

In February 2019, Max and Kayla Jolly opened Jolly Sailing, a business that would capture the hearts of Long Beach visitors and residents by providing them with a premium boat rental experience. The company provides a new way for individuals to take in the vastness of the Pacific Ocean: on a sailboat, with a drink in hand, alongside family, friends, or colleagues. Accompanied by a licensed captain, all guests are free to kick back and enjoy the ride. The owners of the small, Certified Green sailboat rental business pride themselves in the service they provide their passengers, which according to Yelp and Google business ratings, is at the 5 star level.

Based in downtown Long Beach, Jolly Sailing offers a gateway to an incredible nature space, the Pacific Ocean. Surfers, kiteboarders, and wealthy individuals with private yachts know the magical experience the ocean delivers but encountering its glory can be difficult for those without these skill sets and wealth. Behold, Jolly Sailing bridges the gap by welcoming residents and visitors aboard for afternoon and evening charters. Guests enjoy the option to take the helm as well as the thrill of the massive sails switching from one side to the other as the boat crosses the eye of the wind. Sights of sleepy sea lions and sunsets as wide as the horizon also contribute to the memorable sailing experience Jolly Sailing offers.

Kayla Jolly commented on Jolly Sailing’s approaching anniversary, sharing that “The years have absolutely flown by. There have been highs and lows and it’s been an amazing adventure. The decision to purchase our first boat was intimidating, but I am so glad that we took a leap of faith. Then a year later when COVID shut us down, we again grew anxious, but everything has worked out. We’ve seen so much growth, and my husband and I could not be prouder of our business.”

During the off-season, Max and Kayla focus on service improvements and vessel maintenance between charters. To assess their rental service, they chartered a boat in the Caribbean in December of 2021. By switching roles and experiencing a sailboat rental through a customer’s eyes, they were able to pinpoint their business’s strengths as well as opportunities for improvement. The exercise provided the owners with increased gratitude for Jolly Sailing’s personable captains and the comfortability of their vessel. Additionally, they were pleased by the spread of amenities their company provides customers in comparison to what was provided by the boat they had chartered. While owners, Max and Kayla, saw the Caribbean boat’s increased maximum occupancy as a plus, they realize that their maximum group size, 6 passengers, provides them with the opportunity to deliver a more intimate experience. It’s possible that Jolly Sailing will invest in a vessel with increased occupancy down the road, but for now, they are pleased with the experiences they offer. As for maintenance, the vessel will receive TLC in between charters this winter. The hull will receive fresh bottom paint and the hardwood floors in the cabin will be refinished.
