Henry Jan: What Exactly Is a Super App?

Los Angeles, California, USA — Until recently, Super Apps have been found primarily in Asia.  While the term ‘Super App’ is not new, it has been coined by BlackBerry founder Mike Lazaridis in 2010 and described as an “ecosystem of many apps that people would use every day because they offer such a seamless, integrated, contextualized and efficient experience.”

Super Apps typically combine features of social media, e-commerce, on-demand services, and more, allowing users to perform a variety of tasks within the app.

Super Apps have gained popularity in other parts of the world, particularly in Asia (e.g. WeChat, Line, and Grab), and are now just starting to gain momentum in the United States. Many tech companies have claimed to have achieved ‘Super App’ status, but are they really Super Apps? The reality is that most apps who claim to be Super Apps are actually just omni-apps (an app with multiple features).

A true Super App contains micro-apps (also known as ‘mini programs’). Micro-apps are single-purpose, fast-loading apps hosted within a Super App. With micro-apps, businesses are able to launch their own micro-app at a fraction of the cost and time to develop a traditional app, all while tapping into the user base and ecosystem of a Super App.

For example, a Super App might offer a variety of micro-apps for tasks such as booking a ride, ordering food delivery, paying bills, and more. These micro-apps are often developed by third-party developers and integrated into the Super App, allowing users to access a wide range of services within a single app.

Super Apps have gained popularity in other parts of the world, particularly in Asia, and are now just starting to be used in The West. Examples of Super Apps include WeChat in China, Grab in Southeast Asia, and Vezbi in the United States.
