Professor Yuri Zelenkov and student Nikita Volodarskiy at the Higher School of Economics (HSE) Graduate School of Business recently had their research article, “Bankruptcy Prediction on the Base of the Unbalanced Data Using Multi-Objective Selection of Classifiers,” published in the Expert Systems with Applications journal. The article discusses a new bankruptcy forecasting method using “machine learning,” which the International Business Machines Corporation defines as “a branch of artificial intelligence (AI) and computer science, which focuses on the use of data and algorithms to imitate the way that humans learn, gradually improving its accuracy.”
The method, according to the National Research University HSE, was conceived “using a set of historical data on successful and failed companies. The AI is trained using a set of business performance indicators. It then searches for complex patterns in companies’ development and their current state. After being trained on a particular company, the method can be used to predict a business’s future trajectory with some degree of accuracy.”
