Meshing cryptocurrency (crypto) and music are two things on the rise, but A&R and crypto expert, Flex, take things to the next level. Being multidimensional and extremely talented comes naturally to him as he balances being the Director of Strategy for Jikoro Sciences, a Black-led tech company that utilizes crypto to accomplish its goals, and by writing and producing his music. By applying strategies used at Jikoro Sciences with music, Flex notes that blockchain is helping artists grow, take control of their music, and makes the distribution of rights and open access easier.
While in the budding phases of his journey, he began with the intention of becoming an artist. Once realizing that everyone had the same goal, he decided to change things up a bit by making beats on FL Studio. Using YouTube to learn how to make beats, he could reach out to numerous artists who gave him inspiration and notable feedback. In his senior year of high school, Flex even reached out to YG’s manager, Brandon Moore, who told him his track would be on YG’s upcoming album, My Krazy Life. Although the song wasn’t included, this influenced Flex to study Business during his time in college. During this time in college, he created a producing group with ArjayOnthebeat, known for producing songs for artists such as DJ Mustard, Drakeo The Ruler, Joe Moses, Kalan.frr, and so many more. Shadowing managers like Adrian Swish and David Ali and collaborating with different artists expanded his networking skills, enabling him to meet and learn from many new people, such as Grammy Award-Winning songwriter, Vory.
Right now, Flex and Adrian Swish have a few ventures going on, from NFTs, Sports Branding to Marketing and giving back to the community through non-profit events. Being exposed to tech through a college internship, Flex initially expected things to be a bit tough. He states that working at Jikoro Sciences has been exciting and educational because they are an extremely collaborative and helpful team. Leaving some advice for readers, Flex says, “Cryptocurrency is exciting but remember to do your research (DYOR) and avoid get-rich-quick schemes…There are plenty of free educational materials out there. You can speak with industry experts, attend webinars, and join free community classes. Most importantly, don’t share your private information with anyone. Knowledge is key!”
