Latest Update and Developments
In February 2019, Boeing and the engine manufacturer Safran announced their 50:50 joint venture, Initium Aerospace, with an aim to provide state-of-the-art APUs and innovative solutions to customers
February 13, 2019 Boeing-Safran joint venture for auxiliary power units has a name: Initium Aerospace– Auxiliary power units, or APUs, are onboard engines that are used primarily to start an aircraft’s main engines. They also power aircraft systems on the ground when the main engines aren’t running, and can boost onboard power during flight if necessary.
Honeywell APUs now standard on all Airbus A320s– Airbus has designated the Honeywell 131-9A auxiliary power unit as standard equipment for its A320 family of aircraft for its fuel savings and reliability – it is no longer just a selectable option for airlines. Honeywell’s auxiliary power unit is a small gas turbine engine that provides electrical power for starting an aircraft’s main engines and runs air conditioning and other systems while the plane is on the ground. It also provides primary or backup electrical power for environmental, cockpit and hydraulic systems during flight.
Regional Analysis
The region has the highest growth rate in the aviation market. Countries, like China, India, Japan, Australia, and Indonesia, are among the largest aviation markets in the world. Thus, a large number of aircraft are about to be procured by the airlines to cater to the demand arising from the growing passengers in the region. All these factors are expected to generate demand for APUs for aircraft in the coming years in the region. North American region is estimated to be the largest market for Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) in 2014. Presence of major aircraft manufacturers, such as the Boeing Company (US) and Bombardier Inc. (Canada) is driving the aerospace & military Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) market in this region. European market, led by Germany, France, U.K and Russia, is also projected to observe substantial growth in aircraft auxiliary power unit market during the forecast period.
