1. How do you approach the sensitive task of discussing changes and rearrangements with artists?
“I typically sit down with them ahead of time to go over some preproduction questions. A la, What are your goals with the record? What are some records that are in a similar vein to what you’re going for? etc… From there it’s really about figuring out what sounds/instruments they’re looking. Lastly we figure out if they’re looking to make a record to tell a story or if they’re just looking to release a song out into the universe and try to catch that elusive wave to fame. The latter of which really determines if we’re going to go with shorter verses, possibly making the record sub 3 minutes, or my least favorite… abandoning a bridge section.”
2. What is the one thing every song must have for it to be solid?
“Ha!!! Funny enough, after a great hook, I’d say a bridge!! I always tell my clients that the bridge is the hook the only happens once, but it’s can really add a lot to a record. However, in regard to the last question, sometimes that’s not on the table. So let’s go with the hook. The obvious part being the melody, followed by a great lyrical tag.”
3. What’s your musical background?
“I grew up playing guitar and singing in bands. Started with pop punk and then made the inevitable segue to screamo then metal THEN electro-pop haha. Performing was fun but tour was rough. I quickly realized I preferred writing and producing to being on the road. With the added bonus of being able to create all types of music.”
4. Who is the best music producer working in the industry today?
“This is a nasty question… there are so many amazing ones. Can I name a few? I’m gonna name a few. The Monsters & The Strangerz, Kuk Harrell, Michael Pollack, Tushar Apte, Louis Bell, and Federico Vindver are my favorite currently.”
5.What is the first thing you listen for when listening to a new recording?
“Sound selection, vocals and then arrangement. Then I try to figure out which plug-ins they used to achieve each sound.”
