MoMA’s mammoth attempt to understand the 20th century

New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) glides ahead with the third and final
part of its “Making Choices” exhibition, a segment of MoMA2000-that museum’s
mammoth attempt to understand the 20th century and get ready for the 21st
through the prism of its art collection-an idea that they’re pulling off to
great effect.

This week previews the final exhibitions of the “Making Choices” series:
“Anatomically Incorrect,” a look at the defamation of the body in
20th-century art, through the eyes of such artists as Cindy Sherman, Lucas
Samaras, Carolee Schneemann and Man Ray. The show opens April 30 and runs
through September 26. Photography is also represented in “Ideal Motif,” a
series, from the 1930s through the ’70s, of work by Alfred Stieglitz (five
scenes from a hotel window), Ed Weston (nude on sand), Ansel Adams and Harry
Callahan (skyscrapers on Sixth Avenue). Lastly, an exhibition titled “The
Observer: Cartier-Bresson After the War,” a series of 25 Cartier-Bresson
photographs.
