For years, art has been a salient representation of time, indicating the period in which it was created whether during the Renaissance, Impressionism during the late 1800s, or Surrealism from the 1920s into the 50s.

As art is often inspired by the surroundings of the artist, the art itself is often a vehicle, transporting audiences to a time and day. And today with art continuing to evolve, pushing boundaries with new technology and advancements, new styles and periods of art have been born. For pop surrealist Caia Koopman, she found her niche after a lifetime of being surrounded by California’s punk rock and skateboard culture.

Having been immersed in the Santa Cruz, California culture all through the 1980s, the natural-born artist was irrevocably influenced by the cool Cali culture that surrounded her.

Today, she’s known for vivid works that are often portraits of surreal, ethereal-like characters of femininity. Most recently, her work has been showcased at the Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles in an exhibition that runs through May 15th.

She was also recently selected by the prestigious American vodka company, Trust Me to design and create the artwork for a 20,000-bottle series of vodka. The Caia Koopman x Trust Me vodka limited series of bottles can be purchased online and in stores where available. Known for their commitment to showcasing artists and their work, Trust Me continues to call on artists both domestic and globally to be featured as the backdrop of their sleek designed bottles. With a good mix of California, punk rock and skateboard culture fused with bright use of color, themes of fantasy and femininity, Koopman’s art is a true embodiment of pop surrealism. Evoking a visceral response from audiences through her use of delicately designed creatures, the artist continues to break barriers as a female artist. Koopman’s work has additionally been showcased at other respected galleries including Thinkspace, Spacejunk, and La Luz De Jesus Gallery.

Just like many greats before her, Koopman’s work is clearly indicative of the environment and era in which she grew up. Thanks to a lifetime of California punk rock skate culture and her niche for disguising powerful female figures in feminine and delicate designs, her work transcends the definition of pop surrealism.
