German Channel Launches ”Big Diet”

BERLIN — Six men and six women were to start an 105-day slimming drive in front of the cameras Sunday as a German channel launched the latest variant on reality television, called ”Big Diet.”

The channel, RTL II, is hoping to repeat the success it scored last year with the show “Big Brother” — its most successful program since the channel started in 1993.

The new weekly show will put its contestants in a luxurious health farm in the western city of Cologne where, accompanied by health experts, they will share the frustrations of shedding the pounds with a television audience.

The winners will be the man and woman who, at the end of the 105 days, have come closest to their target weight. They will win half of the weight they lose in gold, with the other half to follow at the end of the year if they stick to that weight.
