Zootopia sets new record with $73.7m U.S. opening weekend

Zootopia had a pretty strong opening weekend — so strong that it broke the opening weekend record previously held by Frozen for an animated film. Zootopia reached $73.7m in the U.S., beating out Deadpool for the top slot.

The last Disney Animation Studios film to get near Zootopia’s opening was Frozen, which debuted with $67.3m in December 2013 and went on to make $1.28bn at the global box office.

Zootopia stars Ginnifer Goodwin as the voice of rookie bunny cop Judy Hopps. Zootopia will be titled Zootropolis in the UK and debut on March 25.

Deadpool reigned supreme at the box office the previous three weeks. It is the highest grossing R-rated comic book movie, surpassing 300. A sequel has already been planned.

According to Box Office Mojo, the weekend results were Zootopia in first place, London Has Fallen in second place, Deadpool in third, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot in fourth, and Gods of Egypt in fifth place. Zootopia, London Has Fallen and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot all made their debuts this weekend.
