University student reveals she was the ‘Teletubbies’ sun baby

Jess Smith, a 19-year-old trainee dancer, recently revealed via Facebook, Metro reports, that she was the face of the sun that the Teletubbies Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po often looked up at during the 90s television program.

She had apparently kept her role in the show a secret up until now, when she “outed” herself to her university friends. The revelation apparently came about during a game with her classmates, in which each person was supposed to reveal a secret.

“I used to hide it but after a lot of encouragement from my friends at university, I’ve gained the confidence to come out with it,” she said. Apparently other people have claimed to be the “sun baby” but she showed a document that put a name to the face. Some rumours had it that the baby was actually a different Jessica Smith — the 27-year-old actress who starred in Laguna Beach.

She was just nine months old when she first got involved with the program. A health visitor (qualified nurse or midwife), who had been asked by Ragdoll Productions to find smiley babies, put Smith’s mom in touch with Teletubbies staff. For her work, she was paid £250 ($388) as well as a box of toys. Her father, Bill kept her entertained by waving a teddy bear off-camera.
