Colbert debuted his new single at the end of his popular late-night show The Colbert Report last night, during the final episode of his week-long “Dr. Pepper Presents StePhest ColbChella ‘011 — Rock You Like a Thirst-Icane.”
The song “Charlene II (I’m Over You)” is a follow-up to his other satirical tune, “Charlene (I’m Right Behind You)”, playing on Colbert’s faux obsession with an ex-girlfriend.
White, the former White Stripe frontman, and his Nashville-based record label, Third Man Records, produced the track. The Black Belles, a goth girl rock band also on Third Man, performed backup during the live performance and on the released song.
Available on both iTunes and vinyl, the song includes lyrics such as “I’m done watching you cook dinner while I’m perched in your sycamore trees/ by the way you’re looking thinner, not that it matters to me.”
This isn’t Colbert’s first musical venture. He’s performed “Empire State of Mind” with Alicia Keys, duelled with guitarists from The Decemberists, sang a rendition of Rebecca Black’s “Friday” and released a Christmas album featuring Willie Nelson and John Legend.
