Executive producer and writer Roxanne Messina Captor chatted about her new musical movie “Dream Moms,” which stars Tamera Mowry-Housley. It will premiere on Mother’s Day Weekend on the Hallmark Channel.

‘Dream Moms’

“To see this project grow from the story through to air date is a magnificent and powerful experience,” she said. “Hallmark was the perfect network for this female film honoring mothers. Our executive SVP Elizabeth Yost and EVP Lisa Hamilton Daly got this story immediately. They always saw it as a Mother’s Day premiere,” she said.

“Through the development, production and post production the plan was in place to air the film on Mother’s Day weekend.  It was a joy to know the path through all the phases of making a film,” she said.

On her inspiration to write and executive produce this project, she said, “‘Dream Moms’ is a passion project of mine. I wrote the story because I wanted to explore the importance of never giving up on your dreams.”

“This story is dear to me, as it reminds me of my own mother, who dedicated herself to making me who I am. The hours of taking me to ballet lessons, auditions (as a child performer in musical theatre)and guiding me throughout my life,” she explained.

She continued, “Creating the story around mothers, women who give so much of themselves, to all of us was the perfect catalyst for this story. Following the work from creation to through to air date was powerful and exciting. With my background as a professional ballerina and Broadway triple threat, the passion, disappointments, joys, wins and rejections in reaching for the ultimate dream are feelings one carries around with them all their life.”

Working with Tamera Mowry-Housley

She had great words about working with Tamera Mowry-Housley as her female lead actress. “She is amazing,” she exclaimed. “A true professional and a triple threat. I am proud that this film brought us together. We are working on other projects for the future. Working with Tam is a pleasure and I so look forward to our future collaborations.”

“This film needed to be with Hallmark,” she said.” They know how to tell women’s stories. Hallmark knew from the beginning Mother’s Day weekend was the right slot for the premiere. I am honored.”

“I love being on set,” she said. “It probably comes from my years in theatre as performer and director.  So being on set and seeing so many talented people bring their craft to the project is always exciting for me.”

“From the time I worked with Francis Coppola to the movies I have produced and directed for television, I am always excited by the process. I always get butterflies the night before the first day of shooting,” she added.

Future plans

Regarding her future plans, she said, “I have written a script on a part of the author Pearl Buck’s life.  We  are out to prominent female talent. I will direct this. The film explores how this exceptional woman who won a Nobel and Pulitzer prize felt unfulfilled in her personal life as she was not able to have more than one natural child.”

“I am talking to Lifetime and other networks about new projects,” she said. “My next projects are female true life stories that are fun, dynamic adventures. One project will honor women veterans in a new way, a theme I explored in my documentary Homecoming: Veterans, Wives and Mothers, which has won awards, screened at the UN and was honored by Dr. Biden.”

Success

On her definition of the word success, she said, “Work. Working with collaborative, talented, intelligent people. Of course, paying the bills is also necessary. I like motivating people by my work.”

She concluded about “Dreams Moms,” “Follow your heart and actualize your dreams. It is never too late.”
