On March 12, Sofia Carson and Diane Warren performed their Oscar-nominated song “Applause” at the 2023 Academy Awards.

The 95th annual Academy Awards ceremony took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, and they were the first (out of the five nominated tunes for “Best Original Song”) to perform on that evening.

A global music and acting phenom, Carson began the sentimental piano-laden ballad “Applause” in a controlled and expressive fashion. She allowed her crisp, crystalline voice and her incredible vocal range to shine (where the listener could recall Ariana Grande).

Carson acknowledged Diane Warren as a “14-time Academy Award nominee,” who was eloquently accompanying her on the piano. This inspirational collaboration really tugged at the heartstrings and it was a match made in musical heaven.

The inclusion of a live orchestra and a choir towards the end, helped elevate “Applause” to a higher, more emotional level. It was an anthem of female empowerment, especially since Carson encouraged “all of the women in the room” and “all of the women in the world to give themselves some applause,” and rightfully so. This is an ode that is timely and relevant, especially during this day and age.

Their live performance of “Applause” may be seen below.

Hopefully, this is a harbinger that there will be more collaborations from Sofia Carson and perennial Oscar nominee Diane Warren in the future.
