It opens with the stunning “Heartstrong,” where Collins grabs her listeners from the very start, and is able to sustain their attention throughout the entire EP. It is followed by an atmospheric version of “Ramblin’ Man,” which is worth more than just a passing glance.
“Get Drunk and Cry” is a melancholic ballad, yet she sings it beautifully thanks to her ethereal voice. “Ready To Roll” is refreshing and extremely radio-friendly, where her vocals are reminiscent of Grammy-winning musician Michelle Branch.
“Trainwreckin'” is an upbeat and spitfire tune, that changes the pace of her EP. Collins saves the best song for last. Her EP closes with the angelic “Vintage,” which is a breath of fresh air. In the mellifluous closing track, the listener can recall Alison Krauss meets Susanna Hoffs (from The Bangles).
The Verdict
Overall, Ruthie Collins mesmerizes on her new EP. It is has elements of acoustic, pop, country, adult contemporary and even dance music. She deserves to be played on heavy rotation on the modern country airwaves, especially at a time where there is a shortage of female country singers played on radio stations. It is a substantial indication that Curb Records knows raw and natural talent. To quote the closing tune, this EP is bound to become “Vintage” someday. Her EP is pure ear candy, and it garners an A rating.
