The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band The Zombies released their new ballad-heavy album “Different Game” on March 31.

The acclaimed rock group is comprised of founding keyboardist Rod Argent and lead singer Colin Blunstone, along with drummer Steve Rodford, guitarist Tom Toomey and bassist Soren Koch. The Zombies were inducted into the coveted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 2019.

The LP opens with the pensive title track “Different Game,” which instantly lures listeners in. This tune escribes the story of a man reflecting on his past, torn at how life became so much darker and more difficult than it ever used to be in the charmed days of his youth.

It is followed by “Dropped Reeling & Stupid,” where they showcase some attitude, and the crisp piano-laden ballad “Rediscover.”

Equally expressive is “Runaway,” which has a retro ’60s vibe to it, and the stirring yet beautiful “You Could Be My Love.” They pick up the pace with the enthralling rocker “Merry-Go-Round,” where they compare life accordingly to a merry-go-round.

“I Want to Fly” has elements of classical music to it, and it closes with the harmonica-driven “Got to Move On,” and on a fitting note with the soulful “The Sun Will Rise Again,” which is filled with positivity.

The Verdict

Overall, The Zombies shine on their new album “Different Game.” There is a warmth and intricacy to it like no other, and it proves that they are like fine wine, where they only get better with time and experience. This is a must for an rock fan’s music collection, especially those that gravitate towards the psychedelic side of the genre.

Their new music now is as timely and relevant as ever. “Different Game” has something in it for everyone, and it garners an A rating.
