NYPD Officers Jason Martinoff and Lauren Leggio performed the popular Katy Perry hit, which is revisited regularly each year during Independence Day. Their live video was posted on the official NYPD Facebook page, and it has gone viral ever since (with well over 3,000 shares, and in excess of 224,000 views).
The concept was inspired by a similar video posted on the Facebook page of the Boston Police Department, as well as Katy Perry’s “Carpool Karaoke” video with TV host James Corden.
In their video, they talk about the Boston Police Department’s version of “God Bless America,” and Officer Leggio brings up the opening lyrics to Katy’s Perry “Firework,” which are as follows: “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag,” which Officer Martinoff sings a cappella and Leggio joins him on the following verse. They both harmonize well together, as they drive down the streets of Manhattan. Towards the end of the song, Officer Martinoff brings out the drum sticks for a killer finale.
“Happy 4th of July,” they said. “Be safe out there,” they added. This video also served as a reminder for the public to be safe out there during the Independence Day festivities, and they reminded New Yorkers that while “fireworks” are good to sing about, they are illegal to use.
