Review: Cher pays homage to ABBA with soaring new ‘Dancing Queen’ album (Includes first-hand account)

The CD opens with an enthralling, live rendition of the title track “Dancing Queen,” which instantly inspires the fans and listeners to sing along and dance. Equally fun and infectious is the sassy “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” and her pleasant version of “The Name of the Game.”

“SOS” is another neat tune to sing along with, and she picks up the pace with the upbeat “Waterloo.” “Mamma Mia” is vivacious and a great deal of fun, which stands out as one of the album’s highlight tracks. In “Chiquitita,” Cher displays her wide range as an ABBA song stylist.

The inclusion of “Fernando” on this musical effort is an added bonus, especially since Cher performed the tune in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. It closes on a fitting note with “The Winner Takes It All” and a captivating interpretation of the ABBA ballad “One of Us.”

Dancing Queen by Cher is available on iTunes.

On May 2, 2019, Cher will be performing at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, as part of “The Here We Go Again Tour.” On this tour, the multi-award-winning songstress will perform her classic hits, as well as material from her new Dancing Queen album.

The Verdict

With Dancing Queen, Cher proves that she only gets better with age and experience. She is able to breathe fresh life into these ABBA classics, and she gives them her own spin. This album is a gift by a musical goddess, and she does ABBA justice. Dancing Queen garners an A rating.
