Netflix saves ‘Degrassi’ from cancellation

The giant movie and TV streaming service broke the news via Twitter, confirming rumors that Degrassi would have a future life outside of MTV Canada and TeenNick, who announced last week that the show would end in July.

Netflix and Canada’s Family Channel will release 20 episodes of Degrassi: Next Generation, which is set to air early 2016.

Variety reports that the current Degrassi will finish its final two weeks on the air with an hour long special on July 20 and new episodes every day of the week up until the finale on July 31.

“For more than three decades, this groundbreaking show has been reaching teens with important stories and starting in 2016 our members around the world will be able to enjoy and discover the newest chapter of this great show,” Netflix VP of global content Erik Barmack said in an emailed statement.

According to the Verge, viewers can expect to see many of their favorite characters on the new show.

Degrassi has been around since 1979 and the current series of “Degrassi” has been on the air since 2001.
