Rising artist and social media sensation Kira Kosarin chatted about her new music, the digital age, and dream duet choices in music.

A multi-faceted artist, 24-year-old Kira Kosarin is first and foremost a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, who is ready to put her musicianship front and center.

‘The Thundermans’

Known to many for her starring roles on hit shows like “The Thundermans,” Kosarin grew up surrounded by arts and entertainment. “I did ‘The Thundermans’ for a good six years of my life,” she said. “This month will be 10 years since I got cast in it, and it covers a lot of memories and growing up. It was great and a really good job to have as a teenager.”

She was drawn to playing her character, Phoebe, because she enjoys making people laugh and being in front of a live audience. “I’ve always loved performing whether it’s music or comedy. I’ve always loved meeting fans in real life and making them laugh on the stop,” she said.

‘Something New’ EP

On the song selection process for her “Something New” EP, she said, “It all started during the pandemic, alone in a studio where I wrote about everything that was going on in my life, and that slowly found its way back to my collaborators.”

While her personal favorite tune on the EP changes all the time, she acknowledged that “goodbye & thank u” is very special to her. “The song holds a lot of emotion, and it has personal and specific memories of mine imbued in there,” she said.

“It is also the song that the fans have connected to the most emotionally, and it has been really fun watching them adopt the song and turn it into their own stories and memories,” she added.

Her music video for “goodbye & thank u” may be seen below.

Born on the East Coast, she hails from a musical theater family (her mother a performer, her father a music director) who fostered her love of the craft from a young age.

Balancing music with acting after moving to Los Angeles more than 10 years ago, Kosarin always found pockets and windows in which to write – lyrics, thoughts, melodies – whether between takes or in her rare off-hours from filming.

In 2019, she released Off Brand, her first EP, anchored by the single “Vinyl.” Last year, “First Love Never Lasts,” from her follow-up EP Songbird, grew her existing fanbase (six million followers on Instagram, and 30 million on TikTok) and vaulted Kosarin into the Top 10 of the iTunes Top Pop Songs Chart.

Newly signed to Republic Records, Kosarin has spent the last year chronicling her intentional refresh and reset as an adult. “It is great to be on Republic Records,” she said. “It is really exciting and validating to have a team that I love, respect, and trust. I’ve looked up to the artists on the Republic Records roster for so much of my life so it’s cool to be a part of that list.”

Her forthcoming label debut, “mood ring,” sets the tone for her upcoming project and finally introduces the musician the way she’s always wanted the world to see – and hear on her Something New EP, which is available on digital service providers by clicking here. ‘Thank you to the fans for listening and I hope this project can underscore a specific era in their lives, and something that they can always come back to,” she said.

On the title of the current chapter of her life, Kosarin said, “New Beginnings.”

The digital age

Kosarin opened up about being an artist in the digital age. “It’s interesting, it’s always a balance in any art or creativity,” she said. “It’s about finding a way to keep enough things to myself so that I can still have some privacy and some creative development but also making things for other people to enjoy so that I can connect with the fans. It’s a great way to talk with the fans directly in real-time.”

Regarding her daily motivations, she said, “I keep going, that’s all I can do.”

She listed Jacob Collier and Jeremy Zucker as her dream duet choices in music.

Mercury Lounge show

On August 18, she will be performing at the Mercury Lounge in Manhattan while on tour with Stacey Ryan. “I am so excited,” she said, “I am going on tour with Stacey Ryan in a couple of weeks, and I am playing every song on the EP, which is exciting. I am also going to play a lot of new music that I have been teasing on TikTok. It is going to be a nice set.”

If she were to have any superpower, she revealed that she would love to teleport because it would save her time from flying on airplanes.

On her definition of success, she explained, “Success means having a good work-life balance, and feeling happy and fulfilled while doing something that is working. Also, peace is a really good definition of success these days.”
