Kevin Martin, the frontman of the multi-platinum rock group Candlebox, chatted with Digital Journal’s Markos Papadatos about their new album “Wolves” and their U.S. Tour.

‘Wolves’ album

“Wolves” is Candlebox’s seventh studio album and it will be released worldwide on September 17, 2021. The album will be available in all formats (CD, vinyl, and through digital outlets). “Wolves” embraces fresh modernity in terms of sound and explores new territory.

On the song selection process of the new album “Wolves,” Martin said, “Honestly, we went with what we had. We are not the most prolific band. This record was really what we wanted to do. I don’t know if we selected anything, we went with what we had.”

Two songs from the new album, “Let Me Down Easy” and “My Weakness,” are available to stream now. “Let Me Down Easy” is an aggro, blues-based rocker with a booming bass and edgy guitar riffing, co-written with old Seattle pal Peter Cornell, Chris Cornell’s older brother. “We released this song last year just to give the fans a tease of the record,” he said. “I wrote it with Peter Cornell, Chris’ older brother. We wanted to give people a taste of where we were going direction-wise. We did it to peak the interest of that song.”

“My Weakness” is a love song that melds the honesty of Bryan Adam’s “Summer of ‘69” and the passion of Springsteen’s “Born to Run.” “The concept of ‘My Weakness’ was to let people know that we are going in different directions on this record,” he said. “Both are songs that I co-wrote with other songwriters outside of Candlebox.”

Martin listed the ballad “Riptide,” “Sunshine” and “Nothing Left To Lose,” the latter of which he is totally “jazzed about” as his three personal favorite songs on the album.

U.S. Tour

Candlebox is on their U.S. tour in support of their new album, “Wolves.” The tour will conclude on November 6 in their hometown of Seattle. “The tour is going but it’s strange,” he admitted. “It’s weird since some people are taking masks seriously and some aren’t. At the same time though, it’s great to be out and playing the new songs. That’s the one positive out of it.”

The final two Seattle shows on November 5 and 6 will both feature the original lineup of Candlebox.

Mulcahy’s Pub and Concert Hall show

On Thursday, September 9, Candlebox is performing at Mulcahy’s Pub and Concert Hall in Wantagh on Long Island, New York. “It has been a long time since we played here,” he said. “It will be a good set-list, with old songs and new songs. It will be 16 or 17 songs, and a lot of rock and roll tonight.”
