British actor Jack Wolfe chatted about his new movie “The Magic Flute” and being an actor in the digital age.

‘The Magic Flute’

Wolfe stars opposite Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham (“Amadeus”) and Amir Wilson (“The Letter For The King”), and the movie is in cinemas nationwide as of Friday, March 10, 2023.

“Amir Wilson and F. Murray Abraham were both fantastic to work with,” he said. “Amir is one of my best pals and he is so great at what he does, and watching him work is so great. They were both magic.”

“F. Murray Abraham is an absolute legend. When I found out he was doing this film, I was completely overjoyed. My parents would watch ‘Amadeus,’ which is a fantastic film, and he brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to it. The Mozart connection in this film is a really lovely thing too. He is a wonderful person as well,” Wolfe added.

“The Magic Flute,” directed by Florian Sigl, follows a teen on two journeys: one into a prestigious boarding school to fulfill his aspirations as a singer, and another into a parallel world filled with fantasy and adventure. “Florian is so wonderful, he is so clam and so cool. He is so clever and artistic,” he said.

Tim (Jack Wolfe) has been dreaming his whole life about attending Mozart All Boys Music School, but already his first days there confront him with a hostile headmaster (F. Murray Abraham), the stresses of a first love, and serious doubts about the authenticity of his singing voice.

When Tim discovers a mystical gateway in the school’s library, he is pulled into the fantastic cosmos of Mozart’s opera, The Magic Flute, where imagination has no limits and the Queen of the Night (Sabine Devieilhe) reigns.

On playing Tim, he said, “I enjoyed so many things about playing Tim. Ultimately, this was my first feature film experience so every day brought new firsts for me, which can be so intimidating and exciting. The cast was just so wonderful and friendly that we all really helped each other through it.”

Wolfe acknowledged that this movie was a labor of love for him. “It was a lot of love, and the labor part comes because we shot it so soon during the COVID pandemic, and like so many projects shooting then, we are finally seeing the hard work come out now — shooting with limitations— especially with a film that is so ambitious,” he said.

“It has been a huge year of firsts for me so I think this year is a big one for me,” he said. “Both ‘Shadow Bone’ and ‘The Magic Flute’ represent two huge points for me and they both came so close together. I come from a predominantly theater background so that is very important to me.”

On the title of current chapter of his life, Wolfe shared, “Excited and Scared.”

‘Shadow and Bone’ Season 2

He is looking forward to “Shadow and Bone” Season 2 on Netflix, where he is playing the role of Wylan Hendriks. “It has an exciting week for that as well, we had our premiere last night. I am excited for people to see it,” he said, prior to praising lead actor Ben Barnes for being “brilliant.”

The digital age

On being an actor in the digital age, Wolfe said, “It’s good, the opportunities that it affords is amazing. As with the way technology moves, there are so many new opportunities for things and ways to film things and ways to tell stories and that really excites me. People have access to stories too.”

“I also just hope that socially, more people can tell stories and more people can be part of the stories that are being told, and I hope it continues to go in that direction,” he added.

Dream actors to someday work with

Wolfe listed actresses Cate Blanchett and Toni Collette as his dream actresses to someday work with in a movie. “They are my two favorites at the moment,” he admitted.

Advice for hopefuls

For young and aspiring actors, Wolfe said, “Don’t be afraid to ask questions and don’t be afraid to be honest about how you are feeling or when you are nervous or shy. Asking for help and assistance in that is really important. Also, be nice to people.”

Success

On his definition of success, Wolfe said, “Getting to a place where you are able to experience peace in what you are doing. You are able to stop questioning things and you are just enjoying the work. Ultimately, that would be a place to get to.”
