Interview with Joshua Morrow from ‘The Young and The Restless’ (Includes interview)

“I am gearing up for the holiday,s and I am wrapping up our last week here. It has been a busy time, as always, but I have no complaints. I have a great job,” Morrow said. “I am taking my family on vacation, so we are going to surf for a week over Christmas. I am looking forward to watching my boys and my little girl play in the sand, and a nice family vacation in Paradise.”

Morrow has portrayed Nicholas Newman on the hit daytime drama series The Young and The Restless since 1994. “It has been a crazy blessing. I grew up in Oklahoma on a lake, and I never really had any aspirations or dreams of being an actor, and I fell into it. I couldn’t have asked for a better situation to be in. It’s a wonderful job led by really bright and hard-working people. I have been able to carve a career that stands 23 years. I still have to pinch myself that this small town boy from Oklahoma has been able to do this for this long. It has been an awesome journey.”

When asked to look back and reflect on those 23 years, Morrow said, “I see a lot of great times. I met my wife because I was on this show, and I had my children while I was on this show. I’ve seen many beautiful places in the world. I’ve done awesome trips with my sons, and I’ve had a really, blessed life. Growing up, I never thought I could have a life like this, but it happened and I am so fortunate.”

On staying in good physical shape, Morrow said, “I play a lot of sports. I lead a very active life. I still consider myself to be an athlete, so I play many different sports, and I have three sons that play a lot sports as well, so they keep me very active.”

Throughout his career in the daytime television scene, Morrow has been nominated for five consecutive Emmy awards for “Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series” for his work on The Young and The Restless. “I got all of those when I was pretty young,” he admitted. “It is always nice to be recognized for the work that you do on the show. It was an honor to be nominated!”

Each day, Morrow is motivated by his family. “I do this job to provide for my family. They have been very generous to me over the years, and the fans. This show means so much to millions of people every single day around the world, and I don’t take that lightly. These stories and the characters mean a lot to these people. I am honored to be a part of this rich history that our show has provided for so long for so many,” he explained.

Morrow continued, “We put a lot of hard work in this, and the fans seem to really appreciate it. We are an extremely hard-working group. We work a lot of hours, and we do an insane amount of material in a short period of time, and we need to be really good at it. We need to be pretty sharp at it. We are very blessed to be surrounded by a lot of a lot of creative and talented people. It’s a machine.”

Regarding the key to longevity in the acting industry, Morrow said, “I do think I’m pretty good at my job, but I believe most of it is luck. My first acting coach told me that acting is 95 percent luck and 5 percent preparation. I really fell into a wonderful and cool role on The Young and The Restless. I play a character that is pretty important to our show and the fans usually cheer for him and like him a lot. I got really lucky. There will always be a Nick Newman on this show, whether it is me playing him or not. I’m really blessed that I fell into this role.”

For aspiring daytime actors, Morrow’s advice is as follows: “Never let go of your dream, and do as many plays as you can. I do believe that theater is the true teacher in life, and just never give up since you never know when your moment will happen. My moment came, and I never took it for granted. It has been a dream job of a lifetime. It is an unbelievable job! I am so happy.”

He defined the word success as “Provide for your family!” “A lot of people are struggling with that in this day and age, and that’s hard to watch. Success can be a lot of things. If you are really happy with what you are doing, and you are responsible and a contributing person in this world, and you treat people they way they should be treated, then that’s success to me,” he elaborated.

Digital transformation of the daytime soap world

On the impact of technology in the daytime soap world, he said, “We went to high-definition, so technology is a huge part of that. Our show is still rooted in its principles. We are still doing the same amount of material. People can watch it online now, and it gives them more options to view the show. With social media, you can get a hold of the actors. Technology is huge for building the brand, and maintaining what we have, and hopefully, carrying the show well on in the future. I am not big on social media as much anymore, but I certainly see the value to it.”

For his dedicated fans on The Young and The Restless, Morrow concluded, “A gigantic thank you. We are absolutely nothing with them. Their passion and their interest in our show is what keeps us on the air, and it is what keeps us going. They are so unbelievably committed, and we never forget that. The fans love what we do, and they never seem to get tired of us. We are very fortunate to have them.”
