Emmy nominations announced

Presenters Uzo Aduba from “Orange is the New Black” and Cat Deeley from “So You Think You Can Dance” will announced the nominations. Deeley took over for John Stamos, who recently got into some trouble with the law.

“The Late Show with David Letterman” did get a nomination for talk show for its last year, as did “Parks and Recreation” and “Mad Men.”

But, overall, HBO leads with 126 nominations.

Outstanding Comedy Series
“Louie”
“Modern Family”
“Parks and Recreation”
“Silicon Valley”
“Transparent”
“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”
“Veep”
Notes: Quite an odd list which makes it interesting. To be honest, outside of “Modern Family,” these shows are not widely seen by audiences. That does not mean they are not any good. Rather, it means TV ratings for the Emmys might be low. And TV is about ratings, too, and this will not help.

Outstanding Drama Series
“Better Call Saul”
“Downton Abbey”
“Game of Thrones”
“Homeland”
“House of Cards”
“Mad Men”
“Orange is the New Black”
Notes: Because of a rule change, “Orange is the New Black” ends up in the drama category this time around. None of these dramas are on the major broadcast networks. PBS does air “Downton Abbey,” but that is not ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox. Plus, “Empire,” one of the hottest shows last year, is not nominated.

Lead Actress in a Comedy
Edie Falco, “Nurse Jackie”
Lisa Kudrow, “The Comeback”
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep”
Amy Poehler, “Parks and Recreation”
Amy Schumer, “Inside Amy Schumer”
Lily Tomlin, “Grace and Frankie”
Notes: As long as Julia Louis-Dreyfus is on TV, she gets in. She has had 19 nominations and won five times.

Lead Actor in a Comedy
Anthony Anderson, “Blackish”
Louis CK, “Louie”
Don Ceheadle, “House of Lies”
Will Forte, “The Last Man on Earth”
Matt LeBlanc, “Episodes”
William H Macy, “Shameless”
Jeffrey Tambour, “Transparent”
Notes: In real life, the saga of Caitlyn Jenner is playing out. On TV, it plays out in “Transparent.” There are seven nominees in this category. Yes, that is correct, there are seven for some reason.

Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Claire Danes, “Homeland”
Viola Davis, “How to Get Away with Murder”
Taraji P Henson, “Empire”
Tatiana Maslany, “Orphan Black”
Elisabeth Moss, “Mad Men”
Robin Wright, “House of Cards”
Notes: “Empire” gets a nod here with Henson. If sentiment plays out, Moss may win her first.

Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Kyle Chandler, “Bloodline”
Jeff Daniels, “The Newsroom”
Jon Hamm, “Mad Men”
Bob Odenkirk, “Better Call Saul”
Liev Schreiber, “Ray Donovan”
Kevin Spacey, “House of Cards”
Notes: As cable and other venues get the bulk of nominations, the major networks may tire of airing the show. This category is an example of a shutout for them. Hamm has been nominated 15 times and has yet to take home a trophy. Spacey, on the other hand, has been nominated seven times and has yet to win.

Reality-Competition Series
“The Amazing Race”
“Dancing With The Stars”
“Project Runway”
“So You Think You Can Dance”
“Top Chef”
“The Voice”
Notes: These shows have lost their luster of late but they still have awards coming to them. There was a time when “The Amazing Race” could not lose. Not anymore, but nobody cares anymore either.

Variety series
“The Colbert Report”
“The Daily Show With Jon Stewart”
“Jimmy Kimmel Live”
“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver”
“Late Show With David Letterman”
“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”
Notes: Letterman has a tough road for win, but sentiment may win in the end. Why not? He is the last of what used to be must-see late night viewing. Gone are Johnny Carson, Jack Paar, Jay Leno and Steve Allen. Now, Letterman is gone.

Limited series
“American Crime”
“American Horror Story: Freak Show”
“The Honorable Woman”
“Olive Kitteridge”
“Wolf Hall”
Notes: Having a limited series category is a wise choice. It means those who work on 22 or more episodes are not up against those in 11 or less. There is a difference.

TV movie
“Agatha Christie’s Poirot: Curtain, Poirot’s Last Case”
“Bessie”
“Grace of Monaco”
“Hello Ladies: The Movie”
“Killing Jesus”
“Nightingale”
Notes: Try to guess which networks aired these. Was a time when we all knew and cared.

Supporting actor, drama
Jonathan Banks, “Better Call Saul”
Ben Mendelsohn, “Bloodline”
Jim Carter, “Downton Abbey”
Peter Dinklage, “Game Of Thrones”
Alan Cumming, “The Good Wife”
Michael Kelly, “House Of Cards”
Notes: Often the supporting categories dictate what happens, overall, as the night goes on. Dinklage is always in the mix.

Supporting actress, drama
Joanne Froggatt, “Downton Abbey”
Lena Headey, “Game Of Thrones”
Emilia Clarke, “Game Of Thrones”
Christine Baranski, “The Good Wife”
Christina Hendricks, “Mad Men”
Uzo Aduba, “Orange Is The New Black”
Notes: By moving “Orange” into the drama category, it means Aduba is here. Did she knock out anyone?

Supporting actor, comedy
Andre Braugher, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”
Adam Driver, “Girls”
Keegan-Michael Key, “Key & Peele”
Ty Burrell, “Modern Family”
Tituss Burgess, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”
Tony Hale, “Veep”
Notes: No longer is this category filled with “Modern Family” actors. Only Burrell remains and he has won, too.

Supporting actress, comedy
Mayim Bialik, “The Big Bang Theory”
Niecy Nash, “Getting On”
Julie Bowen, “Modern Family”
Allison Janney, “Mom”
Kate McKinnon “Saturday Night Live”
Gaby Hoffmann, “Transparent”
Jane Krakowski, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”
Anna Chlumsky, “Veep”
Notes: Bowen, like Burrell, still stand from “Modern Family.” But, with eight nominees, why not just put in more? Come on, eight, for crying out loud?

Lead actor, limited series or movie
Timothy Hutton, “American Crime”
Ricky Gervais, “Derek Special”
Adrien Brody, “Houdini”
David Oyelowo, “Nightingale”
Richard Jenkins, “Olive Kitteridge”
Mark Rylance, “Wolf Hall”
Notes: Where do movie actors go when they want juicy roles these days? TV. That is where.

Lead actress, limited series or movie
Felicity Huffman, “American Crime”
Jessica Lange, “American Horror Story”
Queen Latifah, “Bessie”
Maggie Gyllenhaal, “The Honorable Woman”
Frances McDormand, “Olive Kitteridge”
Emma Thompson, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street”
Notes: TV no longer takes a back seat to movies.
