‘Community’ to receive sixth season with Yahoo

Vulture reports that Yahoo has inked a deal with Sony Pictures Television for a 13-episode sixth season. This will be Yahoo’s first foray into digital streaming where it faces the likes of Netflix, Hulu and Amazon. Kathy Savitt, Yahoo’s chief marketing officer, also told Yahoo that the series could well extend beyond its sixth season.

Dan Harmon will be returning as showrunner, and the AV Club says that producers Chris McKenna, Russ Krasnoff and Gary Foster will resume their previous roles. The actors, meanwhile, all signed on before their contracts expired, with the exception of Donald Glover and Jonathan Banks.

Additionally, the new season should have a budget comparable to NBC’s during the first five seasons.

The future for Community looked bleak last week, when the news broke that Hulu, which looked like the show’s savior, had not figured out a deal with Sony.

The new season is a win not just for Sony — which has managed to resurrect other series like Rules of Engagement and Damages — but for Community‘s very vocal fanbase, who started the #SixSeasonAndAMovie hashtag on Twitter when NBC shelved the second half of the show’s third season.

The sixth season now a lock, that leaves the movie — Vulture says that while nothing is official, there have been talks to make it happen as well.
