Until 2006, there were 0.37 percent people of Mexican origin in Vancouver who had status of permanent residents. After easing off the visa requirements early in 2005, Vancouver have experienced quite a substantial influx of Mexican people who came to work in construction industry, especially for future objects of 21st Winter Olympic Games. Many of them came illegally as gastarbeiters and have stayed since.
