Actor and musician Rob Mayes chatted about his new music and his latest acting projects that are coming up.

On his single “humble pie,” he said, “It started with a Bible verse, Matthew 12:36. I came up with the next line, and then I brought in this start to Davis Corley and we were off to the races.”

Regarding his music and songwriting inspirations, he said, “I’m inspired by hope and redemption, and sometimes the heavier things, sometimes just beer, or what’s going on in the world, what’s happening in my life, where I’m falling short, what I happen to be celebrating, God, my demons.”

On the song selection approach for the new album, Mayes said, “Over the last few years, I’ve been releasing singles just about once a month, if not more.  And it’s been kind of fun to then wrap up the year with an album.”

“I just trusted my gut and my ear to put the songs out in the order that I choose to, and then to regroup and come up with a sonic and story-driven song list for the full album so that it’s fun to listen to, and takes you on a bit of a journey, hopefully,” he added.

When asked if he was going for a certain theme, he said, “Thematically, I always gravitate, like I said, to stories of hope and redemption – two things that are paramount in life. But to not risk being too heavy, I wanted to inject some lighter, fun, silly fair as well.”

On his personal favorite song on the collection, Mayes shared, “I gotta tell you, I love ‘Ain’t Nothin’ to See Here’ that I wrote with Dallas Davidson.  Grateful that he made time for me and that we were able to come up with such a great song that I’m proud of. I also love the sound and feel and cojones of ‘humble pie,’ it’s an important message, and I think it drives the point home quite nicely.”

Regarding his future plans, he said, “There will be a lot more music. On the film and TV side, my movie ‘5000 blankets’ just came out in theaters and is now available on PureFlix. I have a movie called “Sweet on you”  opposite Haylie Duff coming out on UPtv on February 26.”

“A country music movie called ‘Just Jake’ due out on UPtv in the spring. Also, another country music movie in which I star opposite Beau Bridges called ‘The Neon Highway’ out later this year,” he added.

For his fans and followers, he concluded about the new album, “I’m grateful to all of you who listen and support the music that I make. I hope that the messages in these songs – that mean so much to me – mean something to you too.”
