Popular emoji crowned word of the year

They say an image is worth 1,000 words, so it seems appropriate that the Oxford Dictionary word of the year for 2015 isn’t a word at all, and instead an emoji.

'Selfie' Oxford Dictionaries 'word of the year' hits main-stream

London - 'Selfie' has been named as 'word of the year' by Oxford Dictionaries as usage shoots up by 17,000 percent. Runners-up were 'twerk', 'binge-watch' and 'Schmeat.'

'Hashtag' voted word of the year for 2012

The word "hashtag" has been voted word of the year in the annual list issued by the American Dialect Society. This year marks the vote's 23rd year.
