Alaska and B.C.'s salmon runs expected to be worst ever recorded

Salmon returns on the west coast look bleak this year. Alaska's salmon returns have been so poor that some communities already are claiming fishery disasters. The sockeye salmon run on B.C.'s Fraser River is expected to be the worst ever recorded.

EPA — Will protect world's most valuable salmon fishery, for now

Washington - In a surprise reversal, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it is withdrawing its plan to suspend environmental protections for an area of Alaska that is home to the world’s most valuable wild salmon fishery.

Some GOP lawmakers and mining companies are banking on the EPA's new head, Scott Pruitt reversing an earlier veto by the agency of a controversial mine project in Alaska's Bristol Bay, despite local opposition and the threat to sockeye salmon fisheries.

Environmentalists watching Mt. Polley and Pebble Mine Project

On August 4, a 580 acre tailing pond owned by Imperial Metals in British Columbia breached, dumping 1.3 billion gallons of toxic mine waste into the environment. On August 5, a Landsat 8 acquired an image of the area showing the extent of the damage.
