Sharing wall space and the spotlight is something that participating artists at Studio 35 are getting accustomed to very well. Setting aside egos and temperaments, the gallery/studio collective continues to thrive.

Despite the woes of the economy and the rising cost of real estate and retail space, not far from the center of town is an art gallery called Studio 35. Rather ordinary from its cottage-like exterior, it has become a center for the arts in Sonoma.

There's that old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. Words and images often go together so it is no surprise that Studio 35 would have a poetry reading on Oct. 10 to compliment its art display.

With a bundle of canvas in her arms, artist Sonja Bakalyar was literally just walking in the door of Studio 35 on Patton Street as sculptor/painter Marsha Klein was taking her works down off the wall.

Long-time friend and fellow artist Helen Mehl was pleased to attend the "Meet the Artist" showing for Sonja Bakalyar this past August 21, at Studio 35 in Sonoma.
Sonja Bakalyar with some of her works, as she was eager to bring them to Studio 35 that day to place them on the wall.
New in town, artist Jan Small attended the "Meet the Artist" gathering that Friday evening. She was very impressed and pleased. And, she felt very welcomed.
Wall space was so filled that the only spot artist Bonnie Joy Kaslan could display her art was in the bathroom. "I don't mind, she said, because believe it or not she sold one of her most expensive pieces, "and while the man was doing his business in the bathroom, he had to look at something and like it so much, he bought it,"
This was Sig Rundstrom's first showing at Studio 35. Artist Sonja Bakalyar who shared the spotlight with him, has been featured at Studio 35 gallery several times since the gallery's debut over a year ago.
Turning the kitchen of the little summer cottage on Patton Street into an office, artistic director Jude Cameron, for Studio 35 meets with artists to schedule a time and space to display their works.
Sculptor, painter Marsha Klein was taking her works down just as artist Sonja Bakalyar was coming in to put hers up that day when this reporter stopped by in July.
An art eisel is out in the backyard at Studio 35 in Sonoma, ready for any artist to use. All available space is being used, including the backyard.
Very proud of his wife's work and accomplishments, husband Steve Bakalyar was in attendance at Sonja's showing. Steve is a writer and scientist who like so many has been drawn into the growing circle of friends who gather at Studio 35.

The entire backyard and the little cottage is all set for use. Art director Jude Cameron noted that art classes and art workshops will also be a regular part of Studio 35.
Even with things still in preparation mode, Studio 35 was already at full capacity as artists from all over Sonoma put their art up on the walls for the grand opening that last week of July.
