Suspended Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen addressed his players in the clubhouse Wednesday, apologizing to the team for saying he admired Fidel Castro.


The sellout crowd in the Miami Marlins' new ballpark cheered the introduction of their starters, who were accompanied by women dressed as Latin showgirls. There was another roar for Muhammad Ali, who delivered the first pitch.


With a number of new high-priced acquisitions, the Miami Marlins feel that now is the time to contend for the NL East title. Miami opens Marlins Park on Wednesday (7 p.m. ET) when the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals begin their first season since 2000 without both Albert Pujols and Tony La Russa.

The manager of the Miami Marlins baseball team is suspended for five games after saying he "loves" the former Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen was suspended for five games Tuesday because of his comments about Fidel Castro. The suspension by the team takes effect immediately. It was announced shortly before Guillen was to hold a news conference to explain his remarks, which caused a public backlash.
