The International Business Times reports OnePlus sent out official invites to an April 20 event yesterday. The wording of the invite strongly suggests the OnePlus Two is just around the corner. That the OnePlus One was launched April 2014 adds credence to this.
OnePlus has seen some mocking by technologists over its “Never Settle” tagline. The company has traditionally implied that the OnePlus One is the only smartphone you’ll need and yet now it has moved “Never Settle” along to a new device.
The OnePlus Two is expected to have a 5.5-inch display powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor. 4GB RAM will be available. It will run Android 5.0 and benefit from all-day battery life with a huge 3,300mAh unit.
OnePlus faced several early issues with the OnePlus One at the time of its launch. Initially, the company changed the design of the European regulatory marks, prompting it to be pulled from sale in Europe.
Then, there were reports of some phones catching fire. Other users found that the material used on the back quickly wore out.
Some people discovered that the phone charged very slowly, had a mysterious yellow tint across the screen or general touchscreen inaccuracies. However, those who got a functioning device have generally been pleased with it.
The OnePlus system of requiring you to have an invite before you can buy a device hasn’t helped sales of the device. Because of this, units are few and far between. It remains to be seen how the OnePlus Two will be sold but hopefully it will become more mainstream and easier to acquire.
The OnePlus Two certainly won’t be launching April 20 as it was revealed to have a release date in the third quarter of this year earlier this week. It may well be shown off and its specifications finally revealed, but, as OnePlus itself says, “anything could happen.”
