Samsung announces Galaxy Edge, Galaxy Note 4 and Gear VR

The announcements came Wednesday at the IFA tech conference in Berlin.

The blitz of announcements comes a week or so before Apple unveils its own arsenal of gadgets.

Galaxy Note 4

The Verge describes this new “phablet” as an improvement on last year’s Note 3, without drastically changing the device’s look.

The biggest aesthetic difference in this new model is a metal band that runs around the phone, replacing the plastic look of previous models. The 5.7″ screen has been upgraded to Quad HD, while the processor has gotten faster. It will run on Android 4.4.4 Kitkat, with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage.

The 16-megapixel camera features improved quality of low-light pictures and more importantly, optical image stabilization. The “phablet” will also have a fingerprint scanner and health monitoring apps.

A press release confirms the Note 4 will be available in the U.S. and Canada.

Galaxy Edge

This may be the first curved phone to really make a splash in the tech world. Mashable says the phone appears to have two screens in one. The main 5.6″ screen is a 2,560 x 1440 Quad HD display, and then there is a thin strip along the right side that can accommodate a row of apps or widgets like a ruler.

It will feature much of the same software and features as the Note 4.

Samsung will reportedly be releasing an API for the Edge, allowing future apps to use the curved screen for novel uses. What those uses are remains to be seen, but it could theoretically be used as a stock ticker, among other things.

Gear VR

As developers find more and more uses for the popular Oculus Rift, Samsung has built its own competitor in the form of the Gear VR.

The goggles are designed to work exclusively with the Note 4. It features a home menu where you select what you want simply by looking at it. Mashable used the gadget and saw a Coldplay concert, and described the feeling as being right in front of the band.

It will also allow for mind-bending 360-degree videos and video games, such as the space adventure game included in the demo.
