Motorola’s ‘shatterproof’ phone survives being dropped 100 times

As with other Motorola Droid handsets, the Turbo 2 is a Verizon exclusive. It has a 5.4-inch Quad HD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, 21-megapixel camera and 3,760mAh battery capable of lasting 13 hours after 15 minutes of charging.
However, the most notable part of the phone’s hardware is its remarkable durability. Motorola is promising the “world’s first shatterproof display” with the Droid Turbo 2, courtesy of a “Shatter Shield” that gives the panel five layers of protection.
Business Insider put the bold claim to the test today, dropping a brand-new handset 100 times onto concrete. After the first fall, the SD card popped out but the device was in otherwise perfect condition. Halfway through the experiment, at 50 drops, the case was badly scuffed but the phone operated as normal with no evidence of any display issues.
Fifty drops later, the phone is visibly severely damaged, including some evident scratching of the screen. It isn’t cracked or shattered though, and the handset continues to operate as normal, suggesting it really can survive 100 falls onto concrete and keep functioning.
Business Insider continued to torture the Droid for a little while longer, deliberately smashing the display against a metal post before stamping on it a few times. The display still refuses to shatter and the phone remains operable after all the vicious tests.
Reviewers have previously noted the Droid Turbo 2’s robustness and extreme durability, commending the return of common-sense materials in place of the thin and slippery metal designs that are so popular today. It still boasts true flagship performance though and should remain a competent device for a couple of years to come.
The Motorola Droid Turbo 2 looks to be the perfect phone for the Verizon customer who wants a flagship device but is prone to inadvertently dropping things. The phone is offered on contract plans or from $624 from Motorola’s website.
