Message requests to replace ‘Other’ messages on Facebook

Facebook announced it will be making the change over the course of the next few days.

When a Facebook user receives a message from someone who is not on their Friends’ list, then the message goes into the “Other” inbox, but that’s going to change.

Messages from non-friends will arrive as requests, and the user can choose to see the message or not.

The VP of messaging services at Facebook, David Marcus, said if you are friends on Facebook, and if you have each other’s contact info and they are synced, then messages from that sender will be sent straight to your inbox. The same goes if you already have an existing open thread with a user and the user sends you a new message.

Marcus said everything else will be a message request. This reduces spam messages, which Marcus said the company will continue to combat.

Ignored and deleted messages will go to the filtered requests folder. All a Facebook user needs is a name and then they can initiate conversation.

This isn’t the only change Facebook is working on. Recently, Facebook announced that it was going to start testing out emoji reactions, as well as fix game invites.

Marcus said that Facebook users can look forward to more changes throughout the months ahead.
