IBM transforms FlashSystem to reduce data costs

IBM’s FlashSystem products are enterprise computer data storage systems for the storage of data on flash memory. Flash memory is an electronic (solid-state) non-volatile computer storage medium, which can be electrically erased and reprogrammed. The market in flash memory products exceeds $30 billion.

Flash memory solutions are an alternative to older-style standard solid-state drives. These use integrated circuit assemblies as memory to store data persistently. While these drives are effective at data storage they are not as flexible in terms of user control.

The IBM FlashSystem solutions are incorporate field-programmable gate arrays. Other components of individual FlashSystem units are custom flash modules and external storage area network interfaces.

The new development is with an ultra-dense FlashSystem array, which is capable of storing more data into the same footprint. This contributes to lower data capacity costs by some 60 percent. In addition, the use of the new Spectrum Virtualize software enables simplified migration and disaster recovery of data to and from the IBM Public Cloud. The updated software also enables IBM and non-IBM storage to be used with Docker and Kubernetes containers environments.

A further feature with the IBM the provision of a cloud-based software program that integrates storage together with artificial intelligence and machine learning. This enables the software to collect inventory and diagnostic information, and for adjustments to be made to optimize the performance of the infrastructure. There is also a ‘Consolidated User Interface’, which brings together activity and performance information within a single dashboard.

Commenting on the new system, Ed Walsh of IBM said: “Companies are seeking guidance in modernizing their data from being a passive cost center to being the central hub for their business. IBM understands that only those that extensively analyze and exploit their data will benefit from it.”

The technologist goes on further to explain the usefulness of the system for businesses undergo digital transformation initiatives: “we are introducing new all-flash solutions that will dramatically lower the cost of storage systems while making data availability – whether on-site or in the cloud – a central part of their business strategy.”
