Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez continues reign as Ring’s P4P king

Aside from his solid hold on the prestigious The Ring P4P title, Gonzalez has also won his fourth world title from the Mexican WBC Flyweight titlist.

It was Gonzalez’s first victory at the 115 pound weight limit (Junior Bantamweight) following his decision to move up from 112 pounds flyweight limit where he reigned as champion for a couple of years.

It was a risky fight for Gonzalez because he may have been stripped of his P4P title if he lost to Cuadras. He also had to drop his WBC light flyweight title as he moved up to the junior bantamweight division.

Gonzalez, who dedicated his victory to his famous compatriot Alexis Arguello said he was the better fighter Saturday night but acknowledged Cuadras as a good fighter.

“I’m very honored to win this fourth divisional title in honor of Alexis Arguello,” Gonzalez said. “I thought I won, he was very good, but I was better tonight,” he added.

It was a give and take fight from the opening round up to the last round as Cuadras was determined to spoil Gonzalez wish to become the first Nicaraguan boxer to win four titles in as many weight classes. But Gonzalez delivered the more telling blows to get the judges nod at the end of the fight.

Judge Max DeLuca scored it 116-112, Robert Hecko 115-113 and Cathy Leonard 117-111, all in favor of Gonzalez.

It was Gonzalez’s 46th fight since turning pro in 2005. Cuadras suffered his first career loss out of 37 pro fights.
