Pacquiao-Mayweather rematch inevitable in 2017

According to Pacquiao’s longtime promoter Bob Arum, who is currently in Manila to confer with Pacquiao on the details of his Nov. 5 fight at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, Pacquiao is set to do two more fights in 2017. One of these two fights could be the Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch.

“If he wins this fight, we have the idea for a couple of big fights next year. And I think that will end his career with two more fights in 2017,” Arum said during his visit to the Philippine senate Tuesday.

While Mayweather has not officially confirmed his ring return, he said he may fight again if the price is right. Boxing fans know that no one else among his challengers can deliver the kind of money that he wants to make for his comeback fight.

“For the right price, I may come back.” said Mayweather.

In May 2015, Mayweather and Pacquiao fought at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight generated 4.6 million pay-per-view (PPV) buys valued at over $500 million in revenues including gate receipts and other sales income. The huge revenue generated by the fight broke all PPV records in boxing history.

While the proposed rematch may not generate the same amount of revenue, boxing insiders say the rematch would generate at least half of the PPV buys it made in May last year. At half of the revenue, the proposed rematch would still be the second highest-grossing PPV buys in boxing history.

Presently there is no impediment for both fighters to face each other in a rematch. In the case of Pacquiao, he has repeatedly called out Mayweather for a second fight.

For his part, Mayweather said he may fight again for the right price.

Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach believes both Mayweather and Pacquiao will face each other for the second time on money issues.

In the case of Pacquiao, he needs more funds to finance his social projects like building hospitals, churches, schools and a variety of charitable projects for the poor and the needy.

For Mayweather, money is so important to support his insatiable appetite for luxurious things like high-end jewelries, fancy houses, luxury cars and even private airplanes.
