Oscar Valdez gears up for first title defense against Osawa

Valdez and Osawa along with WBO super bantamweight titlist Nonito Donaire and challenger Jessie Magdaleno are part of the main attraction of the Pacquiao-Vargas fight at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Valdez, who qualified in the Olympics at age 17, is unbeaten in his 20 pro fights and is coming off a TKO win against Matias Rueda last July at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada to win the vacant WBO featherweight title.

The 25-year-old orthodox fighter from Sonora, Mexico is a knockout artist with a KO ratio of 90 percent, having knocked out 18 of his 20 opponents in his pro career.

Valdez is one of Top Rank Promotions rising stars and is expected to keep his unbeaten record against Osawa, who is the mandatory challenger.

Osawa, who is five years older than Valdez is a tough opponent for the rising Mexican fighter. While Osawa lost three of his 37 pro fights, he is more experienced compared to Valdez.

The 31-year old fighter from Osaka, Japan stands 5’7″ or close to two inches over Valdez’ height of 5′ 5½. He has a fairly good KO ratio of 51 percent.

Meanwhile, Donaire has recently expressed his interest to face Valdez when he moves later to 126 pounds weight limit where Valdez is campaigning.

“I definitely want to go back to 126 when I get done with 122. Valdez is an amazing fighter. He’s a freaking hungry lion and a champion and an amazing person first and foremost. He’s an amazing champion and that is definitely something to look forward to,” Donaire told BoxingScene.com.

The Nov. 5 event is available on Top Rank pay-per-view and will feature Stephen Smith’s debut as ring commentator together Brian Kenny and Timothy Bradley.
