Op-Ed: Why Timothy Bradley has slim chance against Miguel Cotto

Cotto is on standby mode and waiting for a cue from Mayweather for a lucrative rematch if the ongoing Mayweather-Pacquiao talks get scuttled again.

But all indications point to a successful conclusion of the talks, giving Cotto freedom to choose his opponent for his next fight.

Bradley
, who is under contract with Bob Arum’s Top Rank Promotions, won’t have a hard time getting the Cotto fight done as Arum maintains a good rapport with Cotto, a former Top Rank fighter.

While the planned Cotto-Bradley fight could be a pay-per-view (PPV) blockbuster, especially if the fight is held in the east coast where Cotto has a huge following, fight fans view the bout as a mismatch on account of Cotto’s size advantage over Bradley.

Cotto, who is the current WBC and Ring middleweight champion, has found his niche in the 160 pounds weight limit after he pummelled Sergio Martinez into submission in their last encounter.

On the other hand, Bradley has been comfortable fighting in the 147 welterweight limit and if the Cotto fight happens, it will be his first jump to the middleweight limit.

There is no indication yet if they are both agreeable to meet halfway to 154 to make the fight happen. Moving up in weight would be harder for Bradley as he hasn’t fought over 147 before while a downward move for Cotto would be more manageable, having fought at 154 in the past.

The 34-year-old Cotto stands 5’7″ with a reach of 67 while Bradley,31,who stands 5″6″ has a reach of 69.” Both are orthodox fighters.

Bradley is ranked No.4 in the current 147 Ring rating while Cotto is the champion in the 160 middleweight limit.

Cotto has not fought for the last eight months since scoring a KO win over Martinez last year.while Bradley struggled against Diego Chavez last December for a split draw verdict.

Meanwhile, Amir Khan, who serves as backup opponent for either Mayweather or Pacquaio if the parties do not come to terms of the fight, will likely face Marcos Maidana in a rematch.
