Op-Ed: Why Mayweather could make battle with Pacquiao boring to watch

While Manny Pacquiao has promised his fans that he will put up a good, clean and exciting fight as his way of replying to their prayers and continued support, Mayweather may choose not to give in to the wishes of the fans by making the fight boring to watch so long as he keeps his unblemished career record.

Mayweather is reported to be so protective of his spotless career record that he will do anything possible to remain unbeaten because he seems to believe that staying undefeated makes his claim to greatness more believable and convincing to fight fans.

Mexican counter-puncher Juan Manuel Marquez—who has fought Mayweather ones and Pacquiao four times—said Mayweather can make the fight boring if it will help in scoring a win over Pacquiao.

“Floyd’s style and technique has given him 47 wins, so why take a risk in the biggest fight of his career? Floyd is a technical fighter who can make it a boring fight if that suits him,” Marquez told ESPN Deportes.

“But I think for me, in terms of the fight, if it can be a quiet fight for Floyd. He’s going to take that and look to get a clear decision,” Marquez added.

British boxing sensation Amir Khan, who has been salivating a lucrative fight against Mayweather, also said that the upcoming Mayweather-Paccquiao fight is going to be boring to watch as Mayweather will try to make it so in order to win the fight on points.

“It could be a boring fight if both of them try to box each other. Some people have such high hopes for the fight but it could be boring,” Khan told Daily Mail.

“I don’t think Manny would try to make it boring but Mayweather would. Four or five years ago it would have been a bigger fight than it is now, it won’t be as exciting,” he added.

To preserve his unblemished career record, Mayweather has reportedly chosen less capable opponents in recent matches to make sure that he wins the fight.

Mayweather uses his undefeated record to put legitimacy in his claim of being the greatest boxer on the planet in order to effectively market his future fights.

For his next fight, Mayweather had nowhere to go but to take Pacquiao’s challenge as he had ran out of legitimate and valid excuses in order to avoid a clash with the Filipino boxing star.
