Op-Ed: Why Arum, Roach should insist on parallel drug test for Pacquiao

In the aftermath of the well-organized and seemingly scripted statements of some participants in the just-concluded press conference at the Nokia Center in Los Angeles to promote the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight on May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, a noted author and boxing analyst warned of a possible scheme that could scuttle the fight.

Scoop Malinowski, a noted author and boxing analyst believes that such a scenario could happen. In his Ring Observer article, Malinowski writes:

“Just want to put this out there. I have an ever so slight suspicion that Al Haymon could scheme to frame Manny Pacquiao with a fake positive drug test via his and Richard Schaefer’s association with Travis Tygart at USADA. Not saying it will happen, just a remote possibility. Hopefully it won’t.”

Malinowski stated in his article that he is merely speculating and wish that nothing happens that would lead to the cancellation of the fight. Read full article here.

While Malinoski admitted that his statements are speculative, it is highly probable that some people in the Mayweather camp may do it for material or selfish motives.

The best thing for Arum and Roach is to make sure that they run a parallel test to the one being conducted by USADA to counteract any possible attempt to fake the test results .

They could use the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) to do the parallel drug and urine testing or any licensed and trusted agency of their choice.

It is possible though that Arum and Roach have already commissioned VADA to do its own parallel test without informing the public or any one in the camp as a safety measure in case a fake result is used to get the fight cancelled.

Hopefully the scenario being pictured here won’t happen or the fans will be deprived of the fight that they have been wanting to see over the past six years.
