But Mayweather downplayed Porter‘s credential saying the Akron, Ohio native should instead consider Errol Spence, Jr. for his next fight.
Spence, promoted by Mayweather Promotions, was in the undercard of the Broner-Porter fight where he scored a third-round knockout victory against Phil Lo Greco. He is now unbeaten in 17 fights since he turned pro in 2012.
Mayweather, who says he is looking at either Andre Berto or Karim Mayfield for his retirement fight scheduled for Sept. 12, said the closest Porter can get to him is to pick Spence for his next fight.
“This is a guy they’re going to face,” Mayweather said, referring to Spence.. “They’re not going to face Floyd Mayweather,” he added.
“I’m not looking for any more Mayweather undercards,” Porter said. “We were looking to get on the Mayweather-Pacquiao undercard. That didn’t happen. Now I’m not looking at watching him fight after I fight. I’m looking at fighting him.”
It appears Porter is now out of the Mayweather sweepstakes based on his post-fight statements. So who should Porter fight next?
Obviously, Porter wants his IBF welterweight title back which he lost to Kell Brook last year. Brook has retained the title in his recent fight and is now calling out Amir Khan for for his next fight.
A rematch with Brook would be a challenging fight for Porter if he wants the same IBF belt back.
But there are several challengers in the 147 pounds limit who may want to share the spotlight with Porter including Marcos Maidana, Keith Thurman, Timothy Bradley or even Amir Khan, who has been salivating a lucrative fight against Mayweather.
Except for Maidana, Brook, Thurman, Bradley and Khan are current title holders. If Porter wants a title including the one which he lost to Brook, he can face any one of them.
Porter, who pocketed $1.0 million against Broner should be able to take home at least $1.5 million against anyone of them.
