NFL Rumors: Matt Forte to New England Patriots?

The New England Patriots went out and found Steven Jackson at the end of last season, a move that didn’t hurt the team, but failed to bring another Super Bowl trophy to the successful franchise. This squad has struggled with finding the right mix of running backs, but that could change if the latest rumors are true.

Former Chicago Bears star Matt Forte is now a free agent after being released a few weeks back and several teams will have interest in the free agent, despite his age. The 30-year-old is still producing good numbers and his ability to help in the passing game makes him a valuable commodity.

The Pats tend to use backs more in the passing game, but a versatile player like Forte could help add some flexibility and save a roster spot, allowing head coach Bill Belichick to use that open spot for another area of need.

Ryan McCrystal of Bleacher Report believes this is a perfect match for both sides. A two-year deal for incentives could make this a win-win situation for both parties, saving the team money under the salary cap, but allowing the veteran to earn a big payday with some solid play.

Forte has told reporters that winning a championship is still his number one objective and signing with the team that has won the most football games over the last decade makes sense, but New England isn’t the only team that has interest.

Reports have Dallas and Arizona looking for depth at running back, but the Cardinals would likely be a backup spot and the Cowboys have been a mess over the last few years, so if money isn’t the key to adding the former second round pick, the Patriots would appear to be the favorite to sign Forte when the NFL free agent signing period begins next week.
