With Tom Brady out another two weeks and rookie Jacoby Brissett unproven, look for the front office to add a veteran NFL quarterback at some stage this week and several names have already surfaced, including a couple fans wouldn’t expect.
Of course the biggest name available is Michael Vick and he has expressed an interest to play this season. With the Pats’ looking to find some help now, signing a player that can come in and play now if needed is essential, especially with the Houston Texans game being played on Thursday night.
The time frame to learn an offense and be prepared in such short notice does limit what the team can do after just two weeks of action and with Vick, they get a proven commodity and a player that can help move the ball with his arm and his legs.
Another option is former Green Bay Packers backup Matt Flynn. The former LSU signal caller actually spent time with New England last season and would already know the playbook. The veteran hasn’t been linked with any team over the off season, making one wonder if he’s in game shape, but head coach Bill Belichick knows how to push the right buttons and adding a player that already knows the system could prove beneficial, even after Brady returns in week five.
Brissett showed he could handle the situation when thrown into action against the Dolphins. But relying on a youngster for two more weeks could hurt their chances in the AFC East, especially with the Buffalo Bills coming to town in two weeks time.
While no reports have surfaced on potential moves being made, these two veteran are logical choices and a terrific short-term option for one of the best organizations in the NFL.
