But almost a month since he won the WBO championship belt, Mayweather has not vacated the title as he intended.
It turned out that Mayweather had not received the belt yet from WBO, the concerned sanctioning body. Mayweather said he cannot vacate or relinquish something that he hasn’t received.
“I got belts I would like to relinquish that I haven’t yet relinquished. I haven’t yet got my WBO belt. How can I relinquish something if I haven’t received it I have yet to receive my WBO belt. Once again I was on the podium. I said ‘this week I believe that I would like to relinquish my belts and I want to relinquish my belts.” But I’ve still yet to receive my belt. How is somebody fighting for something that I’ve not yet receive. These types of things happen in the sports of boxing, ” Mayweather said.
One of the welterweight fights scheduled for this month is being promoted with the WBO welterweight title that Mayweather won from Pacquiao at stake.
This is the fight between Timothy Bradley and Jessie Vargas, who are both fighting under Bob Arum’s Top Rank Promotions.
Bradley, who once held the title when he outpointed Manny Pacquiao in 2012, said that he wants the championship belt back.
“It’s very important for the title to be on the line because I want to win that world championship. But if the title is not on the line, I still have to put hands on Jessie. I trained, I sacrifice, took time away from the family and somebody has to pay for that,” Bradley told Boxing Scene.
WBO has reportedly given Mayweather “until the first week of July to decide if he intends to keep the title.”
Bradley and Vargas will clash on June 27 at StubHub Center, in California on HBO World Championship Boxing.
